Sebrae data show opening of 26,400 small bakery businesses from January to April, up 17.3% compared to 2024
The bakery sector registered the opening of 26,400 small businesses in Brazil from January to April 2025, according to data released on Tuesday (3.jun.2025) by Sebrae (Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service), based on IRS information.
The number represents a 17.3% growth compared to the same period as 2024. The number of new establishments is equivalent to 220 CNPJs created daily for the manufacture and marketing of bakery products in the country. On average, 10 establishments per hour are recorded.
“It is a combination of factors that have supported the opening of companies in the industry. First, we observed a greater search for fresh, local and personalized foods, especially after pandemic, which has rehearsed neighborhood and proximity markets.”Said Jane Blandina da Costa, Sebrae’s competitiveness analyst.
Costa stated that the cultural tradition of bread consumption in Brazil is a stimulus for new enterprises. It also mentions the relatively low initial cost and the possibilities of innovation, such as handcrafted breads, natural fermentation products and gluten -free or lactose options.
The survey indicates that 86% of new businesses are recorded as MEI (individual microentrepreneurs). Micro -enterprises correspond to 11.6% of the total, while small companies represent 2.14%. In the same period of 2024, 22,500 small businesses were opened in the sector.
Establishments range from simple operations to bakeries with innovative concepts, distributed throughout the national territory. Constant demand for bakery products drives this growth in different regions of the country.
The ideal (Institute for the Development of Food Companies) reports that the bakery sector moved R $ 153.3 billion in 2024. The value represents an increase of 10.9% over the previous year. The data show that bakeries generated more than 1 million direct jobs in Brazil.
The bakeries receive approximately 47 million people daily, which corresponds to 22.1% of the Brazilian population. Sebrae did not present specific projections for the closing of 2025, although the 1st quarter numbers indicate growth trend.
“Success in this sector also depends on a look at the career of the customer experience: welcoming environment, cordial service and quality products make all the difference to turn a daily purchase into a faithful consumption habit.”said the Sebrae analyst.
