A selected, on Wednesday (4), 13 projects to ensure access to strategic raw materials and rare land, some located outside the block or in overseas territories, including one in the . The selected project is a nickel and cobalt plant in São Miguel Paulista, São Paulo. According to the Commission -the executive arm of the European bloc -these projects will “diversify the sources of EU supply and increase economic security”.

“At the same time, projects are designed to boost local value creation in third parties,” he said. After launching at the end of March 47 mineral extraction projects within Europe, the EU, this time, uses third countries or special status territories such as Greenland or New Caledonia. This new list refers to strategic raw materials essential for electric vehicle batteries such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and graffiti, the commission indicated.

It also focuses on the extraction of rare land, essential elements of the production of magnets used in particular in wind turbines. The EU pointed out that several of these projects are located in countries with which the European bloc has “a strategic partnership in raw material value chains.” They are: Canada, Greenland, Kazakhstan, Norway, Serbia, Ukraine and Zambia, as well as a project in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia in South Pacific. The other projects are located in Madagascar, Malaui, South Africa and the United Kingdom.
