Pentagon orders to remove name from the active 'gay' Harvey Milk from the Navy Ship

This is the latest initiative of Hegseth and Trump administration to eliminate all programs, policies, books and mentions on social networks that contain references to diversity, equity and inclusion

The Secretary of the US Defense determined the renameness of the Harvey Milk, a rare measure, to remove the name of the activist for the rights of homosexuals who was murdered and served as a sailor during the Korean war.

US authorities cited by the Associated Press agency (AP) today said that Navy Secretary John Phelan brought a small team to rename the oil replenishment ship and a new name is expected for this month.

These sources, which spoke on condition of anonymity, added that the next name had not yet been chosen. The decision was initially reported by the military.com.

The change was presented in an internal memorandum that, according to the authorities, defended the action as a measure to align with the objectives of President Donald Trump and Pentagon head Pete Hegseth of “restoring warrior culture.”

This is the latest initiative of Hegseth and Trump administration to eliminate all programs, policies, books and mentions on social networks that contain references to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Was also released during the month of pride [Pride Month, em inglês]at the same time from the Pentagon campaign to expel the transgender troops from the US Armed Forces.

The Harvey Milk was appointed in 2016 by then -Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who at the time stated that oil -class class John Lewis would be named leaders who fought for civil and human rights.

Milk, played by Sean Penn in an Oscar -winning movie in 2008, served for four years in the Navy, before being expelled for being gay.

Later, he became one of the first admittedly homosexual candidates elected for a public office. Milk was part of the San Francisco Supervisors Council and had sponsored a bill that prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation in public housing, dwellings and jobs. The bill was approved, and the mayor of San Francisco, George Moscone, sanctioned it.

On November 27, 1978, Milk and Moscon were murdered by Dan White, a disgruntled former municipal supervisor who gave the only vote against the Milk Bill.

The ship was baptized in 2021 and, during the ceremony, then -Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro said he wanted to be present at the event “not only to repair the mistakes of the past, but to inspire all the leaders of the LGBTQIA+ community who served in the Navy, currently in service and also in civil society.”

Although the rename is rare, the Biden government also changed the names of two Navy ships in 2023, as part of the effort to remove confederated names from US military facilities.

The USS Chancellorsville – so -called in honor of the Battle of the Civil War – was renamed USS Robert Smalls, in honor of a sailor and ancient slave.

ASNS Maury, an oceanographic investigation ship originally baptized in honor of a confederate sailor, was renamed USns Marie Tharp, in honor of the oceanographic geologist and cartographer that created the first scientific maps of the Atlantic Ocean bottom.

The maritime tradition gives clues about why it renames ships is so unusual, suggesting that changing a name bears unlucky and attracts revenge from the gods of the sea.
