Commercial satellite images show that the works of the first highway bridge between North Korea and Russia are progressing rapidly, as reported by the media .
“On the North Korean side of the crossing, the preparations for the stirrups and pillars, the road sections immediately on both sides of the bridge are being made. So far, seven shoes for the stirrup of the west side have been installed,” explained this media specialized in news about North Korea.
Meanwhile, on the Russian side, similar works have not yet started in the stirrups, but the road leveling works that lead to the crossing of the bridge have begun. On the contrary, the leveling of the road to the same scale has not yet begun on the North Korean side.
In addition, they have indicated that on both sides of the bridge are being carried out of clearing and excavation, “probably as preparation for the construction of customs facilities.” On the Russian side, a helipad has also been installed around the possible custom of customs.
“The rapid rhythm of the works seems to be in line with a recent report that indicates that the deadline for construction of the bridge has been advanced until mid -2026 since its initial schedule of the late 2026,” he added.
At the end of April, Russia’s Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced the construction of a bridge and a road on the border with North Korea, along the Tunish river, within the framework of the increase in strategic cooperation between the two countries, which has grown as the Russian invasion of Ukraine progresses.
The site of the new infrastructure is located near the existing Friendship Bridge, which has a railway line and dates back to the late 50s, after the end of the Korean War -which ended with an armistice but not with a peace treaty.
“The meaning of this bridge goes beyond the engineering issue,” said Mishustin, who highlighted the importance of relations between the two countries. “It symbolizes the coomún desire for a reinforced friendship and a good neighborhood in the region,” he said.
In this sense, this bridge will expand the Russian road network. As explained by the Russian president, the decision to build it was taken during the visit of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, A Corae del Norte in 2024.
