Consulates expand visits to detention centers and accelerate document issuance after Trump’s migratory changes

Brazilian consulates in the United States have been intensifying their performance in the face of the increase in the number of arrests of immigrants. Actions include visits to detention and reinforcement centers in consular support activities – as document issuance. The information was confirmed to Poder360.

The most recent case that mobilized attention was that of one, detained by agents from ICE (Immigration and Customs Service) on Saturday (31.MAI), in Massachusetts. He lived irregularly in the country and was sent to an immigration detention center.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that it follows the case through the Brazilian General Consulate in Boston. He said he maintains contact with the family of the arrested Brazilian, providing consular assistance, including with legal and psychological support. According to the agency, there is also dialogue with local authorities.

The assessment at Itamaraty is that consular assistance should be assured to all Brazilians abroad, regardless of the migratory situation.

Despite the growing tension involving immigrants, the strategy remains centered on the technical and operational performance of the consulates.

In this scenario, visits to detention centers were intensified and efforts to expedite the issuance of documents. A task force was set up to reinforce consular care in the face of high demand.

One of the reflexes of this overload, according to this digital newspaper, is the significant increase in the birth records of Brazilian children in the US in the first quarter of 2025 – in relation to the same period of 2024.

Changes in Migratory Policy

Since the beginning of his second term, Trump has implemented a series of rigorous changes in migratory politics, focusing on the deportation of irregular immigrants.

Among the measures, it stands out, which allows indocument immigrants to “self -ode” voluntarily. According to Trump, those who do not choose this modality will be found and deported, with no possibility of return.
