– Our study, which we conducted together with the National Education Operator Foundation, shows that children know the most about saving, secondly about prices in stores, about shopping and spending money. However, a very uninvited topic, when it comes to the sphere of finance, is the topic of borrowing and giving not only money, but also various things – says Newseria Agnieszka Salach agency, spokeswoman for Kruk SA, co -initiator of the project “We learn OOO finances”.
The study of financial knowledge, conducted by the National Education Operator Foundation in cooperation with Kruk SA among preschoolers and students of grades 1-3, shows that children most often learn about money from parents and family. As many as 76 percent answered. kids. Just over 40 percent She replied that he derives knowledge on this subject at school or kindergarten. As children pointed out, most often conversations about money with adults concern saving and what it costs – 64 percent indicated respectively. and 41 percent the youngest. For comparison, only 26 and 22 percent talk about borrowing and giving borrowed items or money. kids.
– Teaching children a basic habit of borrowing and giving away can affect whether they will be responsible for financial decisions in their adult life, because in fact each of us must consider whether he can afford to take out a loan, a loan and then be able to pay it off – says Agnieszka Salach. – Not only that, as our research on adults show, a topic related to debt, arising with various types of charges for bills or loan installments is a very shameful matter and as much as over 70 percent. respondents replied that long is a shameful topic. However, it is worth emphasizing that this is a situation that can happen to any of us, so it is worth teaching from an early age that this is a normal matter and it is worth talking about it.
An example of borrowing and giving or recovering a borrowed thing is so much that children have to deal with this phenomenon from an early age. Almost 20 percent The surveyed preschoolers and students admitted that they once borrowed something to a colleague and never regained this thing. Among the third graders 61 percent Children have already experienced this situation.
The study indicates that children usually get money as a gift (66 percent) or as pocket money (35 percent). Every fourth is in this way rewarded for minor work. Among the asked what they do with their money, 74 percent Children admit that they collect them to the piggy bank, and 23 percent – That he seems right away. From among students of grades 3, the money is postponed by 82 percent. respondents.
– The research we have done in the project show that five -year -old children are dealing with money, but rarely anyone talks to them about it. We decided that school and kindergarten is a space where in the form of fun we can present to them the world of money, the world of finance – says Małgorzata Rabenda, education expert and IT trainer, headmaster of the Specto Primary School in Wrocław, one of the institutions who participated in the project “We learn OOO finance”. – Each child is different, each develops differently and it depends on the parent when he talks to the child about it. But the five -year -old freely in kindergarten talks about money, which also showed our classes and our survey.
As part of the “We learn OOO finances” project, an educational path was created on the science of finance for pre -school and early school children. Thanks to this, the youngest – through games, art and movement games, using educational robots Photon AI – learn useful things about money and teach good financial habits.
– Children really like useful knowledge, they feel that this is something they will need in their lives. They are very eager to discuss, tell interesting stories about what is happening on their home-financial land, they cite examples from life. However, we are trying to lead these lessons in a way engaging and referring to various stories from everyday life – explains Małgorzata Rabenda.
10 schools and kindergartens participated in the first edition of the project of the National Education Operator and Kruk SA. In total, over 700 children have benefited from the project. Its authors have prepared four lesson scenarios, during which students learn the history of money, its value, the principles of responsible borrowing and giving money, the importance of savings and pocket money, expenditure planning, learn good habits and ways to deal with financial difficulties. The scenarios are part of the core curriculum and are made available to teachers and parents completely free of charge.
– These children will go on vacation richer about financial knowledge. They will probably pay attention to various situations and will talk to their parents on financial topics, which had the opportunity to discuss in this project with teachers at school – says Agnieszka Salach.
– When going on vacation with a child, which understands the value of money and saving, we can plan a specifically budget: All you need is for one ice cream a day, you can choose whether we will go to the cafe today and spend more money, but tomorrow this ice cream will not be. We can also arrange a specific pocket money, which we give the child at the beginning of the holiday and explain how much he will be enough for him, which he can buy for it, and how much he can save for other needs – explains the director of the Specto Primary School in Wrocław.
As emphasized by spokeswoman Kruk SA, the project will continue in the next school year, and its initiators plan to include more schools and kindergartens from all over the country, both from large and small cities.
