Former South African Paralympic Astar Oscar Pistorius was seen competing in a triathlon race last weekend in the coastal town of Durban, South Africa, 12 years after murdering his girlfriend and a year after his conditional release.

The Affrichaner Netwerk24 language news site reported on Wednesday (4) Pistorius’ participation in the Ironman 70.3 competition. The Netwerk24 quoted an anonymous source saying Pistorius was permitted to his conditional officer to compete.

Conrad Dermehl, Pistorius’s lawyer, told Reuters that Pistorius had participated in the race in Durban.

Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesman for the South African Correction Services Department, said he did not know if Pistorius had received permission to compete but would discover and answer the questions sent by Reuters. He said his conditional officer would need to authorize the trip from his residence to another district.

Pistorius – “Blade Runner” applied by his carbon fiber prostheses – shot the 29 -year -old Reeva Steenkamp to a Valentine’s Day in 2013, in a crime that attracted worldwide attention and shocked a nation used to violence against women.

He repeatedly stated that he confused Steenkamp with an intruder and filed several appeals against his conviction based on this allegation. Pistorius, now 38, was released from prison in January 2024 after serving more than half of his sentence and is on parole until the end of his sentence in 2029.

The Netwerk24 published a photograph of Pistorius pedaling a bicycle with the racing number 105. Pistorius’s characteristic tattoo and prostheses were visible in the photograph.

Reuters contacted the photographer, who authorized the news agency to publish images similar to that used by Netwerk24.

The results published online by the sports timing company SportSplits show that an athlete named Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius competed in the triathlon with the racing number 105, being 555th among all participants and third in the “Physical Disabled” category.

The race involved 2 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling and 21 km of running – a total distance of 113 km.

Pistorius was once the darling of the sports world and a pioneer voice for athletes with disabilities, for which they campaigned to be allowed to compete with participants without disabilities in major sporting events.

He won six gold medals in three Paralympic Games in Athens, Beijing and London, and competed in races for unable athletes at the London-2012 Olympics.
