O was called to testify before the This Thursday (5) in the investigation about his son, the licensed deputy for seeking sanctions from the US government against Brazilian authorities that he accuses of acting against his father. The testimony of the former president, 70, will be made before his interrogation next week before the Federal Supreme Court (STF), in his trial for the attempted coup against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) in 2022. In this case, he may be sentenced to approximately 40 years in prison.

Federal Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, who temporarily turned away from his duties, moved to Washington in February, arguing that the Brazilian court would try to ban him from leaving the country. He is accused of campaigning in the American capital against the STF ministers and in defense of his father, whom he considers a political persecuted.

The Supreme Court granted a request from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) last week to investigate Bolsonaro’s third son for “coercion” and investigation obstruction. Jair Bolsonaro should attend the Federal Police headquarters in Brasilia at 3 pm local time. Eduardo Bolsonaro was also called to testify, but did not.

According to PGR, Eduardo “threat” prosecutors, police and Brazilian ministers in Washington. The deputy requested sanctions against Brazilian authorities, including the revocation of visas for the United States, the blockade of goods and the prohibition of establishing trade relations with any US citizen.

He also published messages with “Manifesto Intimidatory Tom” against “Public Agents” and “Judges in the Criminal Action” faced by his father, according to PGR. Eduardo Bolsonaro’s campaign reverberated in the Republican Party and the government of Donald Trump.

The head of US diplomacy, Marco Rubio, said in May that there was a “strong possibility” of Washington sanctioning STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes for alleged “censorship” and “political persecution” against the Brazilian right. Moraes is responsible for the trial of Jair Bolsonaro’s alleged attempted attempt, as well as the investigation into Eduardo Bolsonaro.

After Rubio’s statements, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva came out in defense of the minister. “What history is that the United States want to criticize something of Brazilian justice?” Lula said on Sunday, lamenting the fact that “the United States want to sue Alexandre de Moraes.”

Inelegable by 2030 for questioning the unreshed voting system, Bolsonaro remains the leader of the right and far right in Brazil and insists that he will be a candidate in the 2026 presidential elections. If he does not, his son Eduardo is one of the candidates for his succession, according to opinion polls.
