Environment Day: NGO returns to the territory of Amazonas 25 years later

Some sustainable solutions used by riverside peoples, who live in the midst of the Amazon rainforest and rivers that bathe the region, show how it is possible to reconcile environmental protection, valuing the local way of life.

A Greenpeace Brasil expedition by, held last May, between the Amazonian municipalities of Carauri and Itamarati was able to verify the advance of human development and generation of employment and income in the region.

The first time the institution was in the region was 25 years ago, to denounce the illegal extraction of wood, and to support the self -demarcation of the indigenous land Deni. On the current trip, Greenpeace managed to see the impacts of sustainable forest management.

Among the solutions used by the population are seed collection, syringe and acai extraction, as well as family farming, which cultivates cassava for flour production, and turtle and pirarucu management.

In images provided by the NGO, recorded during the expedition in the region, the images showed the operation of some of the work.

According to the organization, The region is one of the richest in biodiversity and ecological integrity of the Brazilian Amazon, consisting of dense forests, floodplains, streams and crystalline watercoursesbesides a wide variety of species of fauna and flora, many of them endemic or endangered.
