Residents of Kuludu do Patuazinho point deforestation with chainsaws in certified territory since 2010

Residents of the Quilombola Community of Kulumbu do Patuazinho reported last weekend the invasion of its traditional territory and deforestation of areas considered sacred.

According to the quilombolas, the invaders used chainsaws to overthrow trees in places of cultural and spiritual importance.

A (National Coordination of Articulation of Quilombola Rural Black Communities) relates the increase in invasions to territorial speculation in the region. “The growth of these invasions is directly linked to the speculation of land that increased after the announcement of oil exploration projects on the Amapaense coast ”declared the organization.

The Kuludu Patuazinho territory received certification from the Palmares Cultural Foundation in 2010. Currently, the community awaits the completion of the definitive title process with Incra (National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform).

The invasion takes place at a time of expansion of oil exploration plans in the mouth of Amazonas, a region near the quilombola territory. The state quilombola communities sought international support against oil exploration in the region. They presented a representation to the Inter -American Court of Human Rights requesting the suspension of the licensing process until they are properly consulted on the impacts of projects on their territories.
