Late flight? Rules for compensation can change in Europe

The European Union approved that the minimum delay time will have to be longer for passengers to receive due compensation

European Union countries have agreed to increase the minimum delay time for passengers to receive proper compensation in case of delay on their flights.

And they also want to move the value of compensation: it goes from 250 to 300 euros on short course flights, but is reduced from 600 to 500 euros in the long school.

Short -course flight passengers will now have to wait at least four hours – one more than today – before they asked for compensation.

In addition, it also changes the distance to take into account: so far it has been up to 1,500 kilometers, passes to 3,500 kilometers – or between countries of the European Union.

For long -haul flights, now above 3,500 kilometers, this time goes to at least six hours late.

Current rules dictated that passengers receive 400 euros if the flight is late for three hours in a distance between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometers and 600 euros if this distance exceeds 3,500 kilometers.

The review of the directive regulating the rights of passengers was initially proposed in 2013, having forced 12 years of negotiations until member countries could reach an agreement.

To become law, these new rules have to be sieve by the European Parliament.

Another of the changes is that the door is opened that airlines start to charge a value to passengers who carry hand luggage.
