A League of Women’s Volleyball Nations (Volleyball Nations League – VNL) was created in 2018 by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), with the objective of modernizing and replacing the old Grand Prix Mundialwhich existed from 1993 to 2017.

A VNL reúne as 16 best selections in the world In an annual competition, with a rotating qualifying phase (everyone plays against everyone in weekly groups), followed by a final phase with the 8 best teams.

Italy was champion of the 2024 Women’s Volleyball League after beating Japan in the big decision in Bangkok, Thailand. With this, the Italians reached the second title in the history of the competition, behind only the United States, which has three achievements.

History of League of Women’s Volleyball Nations

The competition was designed to replace the old tournaments (such as the Grand Prixin the feminine, and the World Leaguein the male) for an event more attractive, global and modernwith greater visibility and financial return.

The league of volleyball nations is held annually, and teams pass through different countries before performing the final phase in the same place. On February 13, 2024, a reformulation was announced on the World Volleyball calendar, with the expansion of 16 to 18 participating selections in the League of Nations.

Being part of the changes, Challenger Cup was extinct and all teams became part of the tournament using the world ranking.

VNL has three groups, with six selections each, each has three weeks of competition to play. With the change of format, the FIVB, the International Volleyball Federation has promised a week more rest for athletes who will be competing in the League of Nations.

The final phase is played in the eliminatory system, consisting of the seven best teams of the qualifying phase besides the host country team.
