This week, Jack Greener, a student who suffered a blow from an instructor that he left him quadriplegic received an indemnity of $ 56 million. The case occurred in the United States in 2018, when the victim, who was a beginner in martial art, was overthrown by a black belt teacher.
See the moment the instructor applies the scam on Jack:
Jack Greener, who was 23 at the time, was a white band when he received the blow. Instructor Francisco Iturralde of the Del Mar Jiu Jitsu Academy toppled the student and, during the movement, Jack had his neck twisted and the crushed cervical vertebrae.
The coup knocked Greener and caused paralysis. The American was hospitalized for months to the hospital. He sued Iturralde and the Academy, located in San Diego, California.
Judgment
Rener Gracie, grandson of Brazilian Helio Gracie and family member who is a reference in the sport, was called to be a witness expert in the trial. According to him, because he is a beginner, the instructor did not take it light when applying the movement.
“He put all the weight of his body on Greene’s neck,” explained Rener. Francisco Iturralde was known as “sinister” because of the aggressive way of fighting.
In defense, the instructor and the academy claimed that the incident was an accident.
At San Diego’s first court decision in 2023, it was decided that Jack would receive $ 46 million. Then, the Del Jiu Jitsu Academy resorted to California’s Supreme Court, but the appeal was rejected this week.
The verdict had been confirmed at the end of 2024, with the amount adjusted to $ 56 million, due to interest.
Currently, Greener is a motivational speaker and participates in climbing mountains adapted to people with special needs.
