The jumping increase in defense expenses is unrealistic. However, with a gradual increase in expenditure, it is necessary to count in the current situation. This was stated at the Sunday press conference by Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD).
At the same time, he stressed that part of the defense expenditure must have the possibility of dual use, including infrastructure, which can serve the civilian population. “If a reasonable proposal will come and the condition of the possibility of dual use (…) will be met. But, if someone thinks that if we are now giving two percent, and there will be a five percent year, let it forget,” declared. “Jumping increase is impossible,” stressed.
He intends that President of the Slovak Republic Peter Pellegrini should re -convene a round table with the representation of all relevant political parties. “This is a question and a decision that will go far beyond the current term,” The Prime Minister argued.
According to the Prime Minister, the proposal to increase defense spending within NATO is based on the current tense atmosphere and tension between Europe and the US, Especially in connection with the United States’ appeal to increase its contributions in the North Atlantic Alliance.
