During the launch of the actions of the Environment Month, held on Tuesday (3) in the auditorium of the Acre Museum, Acre’s Secretary of Environment, Leonardo Carvalho, openly recognized the increase in deforestation in the state and detailed measures being taken to contain the situation.

The secretary’s speech, based on data and technical observations, contrasts with the attitude of Governor Gladson Cameli, who questioned the truth of a report released by the Mapbiomas network.

According to Carvalho, Acre has been recording a growth in deforestation rates since last year. “Indeed, the entire Amazon had many episodes of burning, which precede deforestation. We realized this evolution and began planning in February this year, in the rainy season, acting in regions such as Acolândia,” he said.
The secretary also pointed out a tendency to increase deforestation in electoral periods, which, according to him, is verified in the historical data. Although the state registered two consecutive years of reduction in deforestation, Carvalho admitted that there was a “slight oscillation” in recent numbers. “Even though the numbers are not the officers we follow, we use Inpe data, we realize this oscillation and are working to reverse it with integrated actions,” he said.
Among the measures cited by Carvalho are the reinforcement of preventive actions before the start of the dry season, the creation of community brigades in conservation units and the expansion of joint action with the Fire Department and the Federal Government. “We will have 50 brigade members already trained, the Fire Department is reinforced with new equipment and we are also acting in greater integration with the federal government,” he added.

In contrast to the secretary’s technical and realistic tone, Governor Gladson Cameli minimized the contents of the Mapbiomas network report, which pointed to a 31% increase in deforestation in the state. “I do not agree with this report. Let’s look proportionally what each state did, and if you look well, it is all interpretation. Then it is for those who want to interpret the positive side and the negative side,” said the governor, in a tone of distrust about the study methodology.
While the secretary presents data, admits the problem and exposes coping strategies, the governor adopts a political and defensive discourse, relativizing the indicators.
