According to the senator’s wife, María Claudia Tarazona, the politician left surgery that extended for more than three hours, but remains in critical condition; authorities continued to investigate the case
He is struggling for his life, said the wife of the senator and presidential candidate of Colombia for the conservative center Democratic party. Uribe was shot in the head around 7 pm (Brasília) at a campaign event on Saturday (07). “Miguel is struggling at these times of his life. We ask God to guide the hands of the doctors who are attending him. And I ask us to come together in a network of prayers for Miguel’s life,” wrote María Claudia Tarazona, Uribe’s wife, on the candidate’s page on Sunday (08).
After surgery that extended for more than three hours, Uribe left the operation, but his condition was still critical, according to Tarazona. Authorities were still investigating the case. The 39 -year -old senator was shot in a public park in Bogota, according to a party statement condemning the attack. According to Colombian media, a minor suspect was arrested, but would undergo surgery after being shot by the senator’s security scheme. The party stated in a statement that “armed subjects shot it from it from the back,” according to local press.
“I hope Miguel Uribe Turbay survives, is what I want most,” said Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who repudiated the attack on social networks on Saturday. The executive leader referred to the cycles of violence that persist in the country and expressed solidarity with the senator’s family. Earlier on Saturday, the national government had issued a note describing the attack as an act of violence “not only to the senator’s personal integrity, but also to democracy, freedom of thought and the legitimate exercise of politics in Colombia.”
