NATO asks for the accelerator to defend Europe's heavens against Russian threat

Bloomberg on Tuesday reported that the Atlantic Alliance is proposing to its European members multiply by five its air defense capacity land. The proposal, even in an informal phase, seeks to prepare Europe to possible Russian aggressions, at a time when the defensive infrastructure of the continent show signs of wear after decades of divestment. Each country would adapt this increase according to its capacities, although for now specific deadlines are managed.

This plan will be discussed at the next meeting of NATO Defense Ministers, planned by the end of this week in Brussels. A high -ranking European military source, which spoke under anonymity, acknowledged that during the last 30 years there has been a weakening of air defense systems in Europe, the result of a change of priorities after the cold war. The threats of the Middle East and North Africa had diverted attention, but now the focus looked again at the east.

The strengthening of the air shield is part of a broader strategy of rearming within NATO. According to Bloombergit is being considered to establish a new spending threshold: 5% of GDPwith 3.5% directly intended for military defense, and the rest focused on complementary areas such as cybersecurity, strategic infrastructure and civil protection.
