The Abbey, belonging to the Order of St. Bento, houses 18 monks that follow the motto ‘Ora et labora’ and are dedicated to various activities, including the production of this unique liquor in the country.
The only active abbey in Portugal is located in Santo Tirso. Among various activities, the production of a monastic liquor that already has 90 years is highlighted. To mark this date, a new edition that aged 30 years was launched in Barrels de Carvalho.
In the Abbey, which belongs to the Order of St. Benedict, currently 18 monks live. These follow the Benedictine motto “Ora et labora” (“pray and work”) and are dedicated to various tasks, among which the production of liqueur, the only gender in the country, stands out.
To celebrate the 90th birthday, a special edition of this liqueur was created, recognized for its long maturation.
The monastery also has a carpentry workshop, located in an area where it goes through a tunnel that leads to the external stay. This infrastructure is prepared to welcome ladies, couples or small groups that seek a space of silence and the possibility of participating in the prayers of the monastic community.
