In addition to Herus, four more people were injured and still hospitalized at Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital, one in serious condition. Participants held posters with the words: “Justice to Herus. Slum is not a bad guy.” Teenagers who participated in the gang presentation during the party showed the bloodstained shirts. In a video published on the non -governmental organization’s social networks (NGO), a resident said he even confronted the police after the start of the operation. “I asked them: ‘Why are you doing this? The Ministry of Racial Equality will send letters to state authorities and control bodies so that “the reasons and effects of the operation are presented.” On social networks, Minister Anielle Franco classified the case as “revolting and desperate” and provided solidarity to the families of Herus and the injured: “A young man died and several people were injured by a public security policy that does not respect the lives of those who live and reside in slums and peripheries.”

Human Rights Minister Macaé Evaristo also positioned herself about what happened. “Public security cannot be synonymous with fear, it is a right of all. Culture and life rights must be guaranteed, regardless of zip code,” he published in his profiles.

The Center for the Defense of Human Rights of the Public Defender of the State of Rio de Janeiro also issued a note of repudiation of the episode. “A police operation is not justified during a full June party, with the presence of children and adolescents. Protection of children and adolescents is the obligation of the state, and it is not acceptable that the confrontation of organized crime puts exactly those who have the primary obligation to protect.”

The case is also being accompanied by the Human Rights Commission of the State Legislative Assembly. The Public Prosecution Service of the State of Rio de Janeiro expressed “deep grief” for events and sympathized with the victims’ relatives, the injured and the whole community. “The MPRJ highlights its commitment to independence, the determination of the facts and the exercise of the external control of police activity. To this end, it follows the case from the first moments, in order to seek the appropriate measures and accountability of those who are of law,” said the agency in a statement.
