For the first time since 1965, a US President fell part of the state’s force without a request from the governor; 2,000 soldiers must be mobilized
The President of the United States, (Republican Party), authorized the sending of 2,000 National Guard soldiers to Los Angeles, California. The decision was made on Saturday night (7.Jun.2025), after protests against immigration operations intensified by the 2nd consecutive day in the city. Police used tear gas against protesters during the clashes.
The governor of California, (Democratic Party), classified the measure as “Purposely inflammatory” and stated that she will “just climb tensions ” in the region. Trump’s decision was formalized by signing a memorandum, which called part of the California National Guard troops under the authority of the federal norm that allows the use of the National Guard in the event of “Rebellion or danger of rebellion against the authority of the US government”transferring the control of state custody to the federal government.
According to the US newspaper, it is rare for a US president to use the instrument to which Trump used-which in practice goes over the authority of the state governor.
It is the first time since 1965 that a president triggers the National Guard of a state without a request from the governor, he told Elizabeth Goitein, senior director of the Program of Freedom and National Security of, an independent organization of law and public policies. The last time was when President Lyndon B. Johnson (Democratic Party, 1963-1969) sent troops to Alabama to protect protesters in defense of civil rights.

In terms of sending the troops and the permanence of his activity for 60 days, Trump states that the demonstrations prevented the “execution of laws ” e “They constitute a form of rebellion against the authority of the United States Government”. Read the full English (PDF – 93 KB).
The Secretary of Defense, reported that the troops were being mobilized “immediately” and threatened to send “Active Naval Marines” if the protests continued.
The tensions began on Friday (6.jun.2025), when protesters clashed with agents who carried out immigration operations in various locations in downtown Los Angeles.
On Saturday (7.Jun), the actions of the (US Immigration and Customs Department) extended to Paramount, a majority Latin region to southeast Los Angeles. There, the agents were received with more protests in front of an industrial park.
During an impasse that lasted hours in Paramount, border patrol agents equipped with antimotim material and gas masks set up guard outside an industrial park. They launched tear gas while protesters gathered nearby.
The (internal security department) reported that recent ICE operations in Los Angeles resulted in the arrest of 118 immigrants. More than 12 people were arrested and accused of preventing immigration agents, according to the United States Attorney’s office to the California Central District.
National troops were also sent during protests in Los Angeles in 1992. At the time, however, the federal government complied with a request from the then governor of California, and, unlike this time, were widespread riots throughout the city.
In response to Trump’s decision, Newsom ordered California road patrol to send additional police to maintain public safety. “The federal government is sowing the chaos to have an excuse to climb. This is not the way any civilized country behaves ”, said the governor.
In one in the Truth Social Network, Trump criticized the management of protests by Newsom and the mayor of Los Angeles (Democratic Party). He said the federal government would “Intervene and solve the problem, riots and looters, the way it should be resolved !!! ”.
President of the Californian branch of (International Service Employment Union), was arrested during the 6th Free Protests (6.Jun). From the hospital, he stated:
“What happened to me does not concern me. This is something much bigger. This refers to how we, as a community, come together and resist the injustice that is happening. Working people, members of our families and our community are being treated as criminals. We all collectively have to oppose this madness because this is not justice ”.
