Fewer and fewer migrants come to Europe – but that could change again

On all major escape and migration routes in the direction of the EU, the number of arrival is falling, and since last year. In some cases, the declines are massive according to the EU border protection agency Frontex. It was 64 percent in the first quarter of 2025 on the West Balkan route. Or 59 percent on the central Mediterranean route to Italy. At the same time, the number of asylum applications in Austria fell by a full 35 percent in the first year of the year.
