The UN Oceans Conference in Nice, Macron and Guterres call on the protection of seabed and biodiversity.
In Nice, France, the 3rd UN conference on the Oceans (UOC3) began on Monday. French President Emmanuel Macron and UN Secretary -General António Guterres performed with speeches at the beginning. They both called on the protection of world waters and seabed. According to AFP and DPA, TASR reports this.
“I think that starting with economic steps that disrupt the deep seabed, disrupt biodiversity and destroy it, is madness,” Macron said, calling for a moratorium to use a deep seabed.
Calls to protect seas
In his speech, the UN Secretary -General called on the “Deep Sea to become the Wild West”. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva thinks that the threat to the oceans is mainly “unilateralism”.
Representatives of 130 countries meet from Monday to Friday to Friday to Friday. The main points of the program include the fight against water pollution by plastics, the expansion of protected marine areas in international waters and the discussion of controversial mining of raw materials from deep seas.
Ratification of the Biodiversity Agreement
The conference is also expected to make progress on the ratification of the International Convention for the Protection of the Open Sea – a biodiversity contract outside the national jurisdiction (BBNJ), which must be ratified by 60 countries to enter into force. 32 states have done so since the agreement was adopted.
