How do the 24 hours of Le Mans work?

The 24 hours of Le Mans are one of the most famous and traditional resistance tests in the world, held annually since 1923 in the city of Le Mans, France. Organized by Automobile Club de L’Oteest (ACO), the race is part of the FIA World Endurance Championship. It overcomes the car that completes the longest distance over 24 continuous hours.

During this period, each car is driven by three pilots, who take turns, so that none can drive more than four hours in a row or exceed the total of 14 hours over the race.

Cars are divided into categories that compete simultaneously on the same track. Currently, they are Hypercar (with the most powerful and technologically advanced vehicles), LMP2 (high -performance prototypes used by private teams) and LMGT3 (street -based cars). Each category has its own winners, but there is also a general winner.

The race takes place at La Sarthe Circuit, a 13.6 km layout that mixes sections of public road with permanent race track sectors.
