The Greenland Federation (Kak) announced on Tuesday (10) that its request for adhesion to Concacaf, the confederation that brings together the countries of North America, Central America and the Caribbean, was rejected.
“We received a brief letter from Secretary-General Philippe Moggio rejecting our request to join Concacaf as 42nd Member of the Confederation, wrote Kak President Kenneth Kleist on Facebook.
The Greenland Federation made its request a year ago, before this Danish autonomous territory became the object of desire of the Trump administration.
Founded in 1971, Kak asked to join Concacaf in the impossibility of joining the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) for not complying with the criteria of independence and governance required by the European Organization.
Greenland, according to its federation, is the only territory in the world that does not belong to a regional confederation, which prevents it from playing international matches.
For Kleist, Concacaf’s rejection “is not a victory for football democracy.”
This decision “does not make football accessible to everyone and demonstrates the difficulties of small countries to obtain authorization to play with their own flag,” Kleist added in the statement.
