The former Navy Commander, Squad Admiral Almir Garnierdenied, in a statement to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) on Tuesday (10), that he made troops available to former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for a possible attempted coup d’état in 2022.
Garnier gave Minister Alexandre de Moraes his version of a meeting between the heads of the Armed Forces and Bolsonaro, which took place on December 7, 2022.
“This did not occur. There was no deliberations. The president did not open the floor to us. He did his considerations, expressed what seemed more concerns and analysis of possibility than properly an idea or intention to conduct something in a certain direction. The only one I realized, which was tangible and important, was the concern with public safety, for which GLO is the proper instrument within certain parameters,” the military said.

According to the complaint of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), Garnier was the only member of the Armed Forces to join the coup plan.
Garnier’s role in the coup plot was one of the divergences of the testimonials of former Army commanders Freire Gomes and Baptista Junior Air Force in recent weeks.
According to Baptista Junior, Garnier would have made troops available to Bolsonaro, signaling support for the coup. Freire Gomes, however, minimized the gesture and denied having interpreted as a collusion, although prior statements to the Federal Police indicated the opposite.
By the plan, Garnier was denounced by armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup, among other crimes.
