The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will award the former head of state General Ramalho Eanes with the Grand Collar of the Military Order of Avis, during the June 10 ceremony in Lagos.

According to the Honorary Orders Portal, “the Avis Military Order is intended to reward high military services, and exclusively reserved for the Armed Forces and Republican National Guard officers, as well as units, organs, establishments and military bodies”.

According to the Presidency of the Republic, this will be the first time that the Great-collar of the Military Order of Avis, The highest degree of this military order.

General Ramalho Eanes was the first president of the Republic elected by universal suffrage in democracy in the 1976 presidential, and fulfilled two terms in the head of the state until 1986.

In November last year, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa described him as “A wise attentive to the present and the futureAnd in January this year, when the former president turned 90, thanked him for the service provided to Portugal.

“It served Portugal in the Armed Forces. Served Portugal on April 25th. Served Portugal during the revolution. It served Portugal before, during and after November 25, 1975. It served Portugal with his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic. It served Portugal with its reconditeration and reelection in the second term in the presidency of the Republic, ”wrote the head of state, in a message of congratulations to Ramalho Eanes.

António Ramalho Eanes was born in Alcains, Castelo Branco, on January 25, 1935.

As a military man, he participated in the colonial war. After April 25, 1974, it was the operational commander of November 25, 1975, which marked the end of the so-called ongoing revolutionary period (PRE), and headed the army’s staff.

After leaving the Presidency of the Republic, he led the Democratic Renewing Party (PRD), a political force that was born when he was finishing his second term, inspired by his figure, and which was the third most voted in the 1985 early legislatures.
