Ten people died following an attack at a school of Graz
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, lamented that there are schools that become a place of violence after the shooting in an establishment in the Austria in which they died, expressing solidarity with the victims.
“It’s hard to endure when schools become places of death and violence,” wrote the leader of the community executive on social networks, adding that “schools are symbols of youth, hope and future.”
Also the leader of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, manifested “deeply shocked by the terrible attack at a school in Graz, this morning,” adding that “Europe is next to Austria.”
Already the president and chancellor of Austria were shocked by the shooting. Austrian chancellor Christian Stocker, who is already on his way to Graz, with his interior minister Gerhard Karner, said the shooting “is a national tragedy that deeply shocks the entire country.”
“There are no words to describe the pain and suffering that all of us, all Austria, we feel now,” Stocker wrote in a statement also published in X.
For his part, Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen said that “the horror [do incidente] cannot be expressed in words. ”
“These were young people who had their entire lives ahead. A teacher who accompanied them on their journey,” said the Austrian head of state.
Ten people died on Tuesday morning following an attack at a Graz, apparently committed by a former student, according to the mayor, Elke Kahr, quoted by the APA news agency.
Among the victims are eight students, an adult and the presumed author of the attack, which, according to police, will have acted alone and whose reason is still unknown, Kahr needed.
There is also an indefinite number of injuries, which is yet to account for. However, in local hospitals there were several injuries.
The suspect was found dead in one of the bathrooms, according to the first evidence and, according to APA, will have committed suicide.
The Kronen Zeitung newspaper indicates that the shooting began around 10:00 am (09:00 in Lisbon) and that the alleged perpetrator fired in two different classrooms.
“Several special units of the intervention police are on site,” police said on social network X.
The area around the school has been isolated and is being watched by strongly armed police, and traffic has been diverted.
Within 10 days, on 20 of this month, there will be 10 years of another shooting in Graz, in which three people were killed.
Graz, the second largest city in Austria, is located in the southeast of the country and has about 300,000 inhabitants.
