Expansion projects 31 new stations and 44 km of São Gonçalo rails to Recreio; current mesh has 51 km
The State Government of Rio de Janeiro presented this Monday (9.jun.2025) a proposal for expansion of the subway, with an estimated investment of R $ 28.8 billion. The initiative projects 31 new stations and 44 km of rails.
The plan is to start the new operations In 2031, with the full completion of the project by the end of 2032. The river subway today has 3 active lines (1,2 and 4). There are 41 stations, with 51 km of rails carrying 650,000 passengers a day.
The new lines include the stretch of the Estácio neighborhood to Praça 15, the construction of Line 3 – from Praça 15 the raccoon, in São Gonçalo, passing through Niterói – and the extension of Line 4 to Recreio dos Bandeirantes.
The program will be executed with public-private partnerships added to investments from the state, municipal and BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) governments. The expectation is to open the bidding processes in 2026.
“Our goal is to facilitate the daily life of the population, shorten distances and ensure more quality public transport. It is a union of efforts between the federal government, the state government and the municipalities to transform the mobility and quality of life of the population,”, Said the minister of cities, Jader Barbalho Filho.
