USA sanction "false charities" that can finance Hamas and other Palestinian organizations

Washington accentuates financial pressure on organizations that say “masking humanitarian terrorist activities.” Among the visits are foundations based in the Gaza, Türkiye, Algeria, the Netherlands and Italy range

The United States Treasury Department announced Tuesday a new package of sanctions against five charities-and five associated individuals-accusing them of channeling funds to the Hamas and Popular Front for Palestine (FPLP) armed arms, two Palestinian organizations with active military presence mainly in Gaza.

According to the US Treasury, the visited disguised terrorism funding activities under the cover of humanitarian work-both within the Gaza and abroad range. This action, inserted in a broader effort of financial “asphyxia” to networks considered terrorist, mainly aims to undermine Hamas’s ability to maneuver.

Among the institutions now sanctioned are Al Weam Charitable Societybased on Gaza; the Palestinian Foundationheadquartered in Türkiye; the El Baraka Association for Charitable and Humanitarian Workfrom Algeria; the Israel Charitable Foundationin the Netherlands; and the Charity Association The golden domebased in Italy. The five identified individuals held leadership positions in these organizations.

“This action underlines the importance of protecting the sector from charity from terrorist groups such as Hamas and FPLP, which continue to use false solidarity institutions to finance their terrorist and military operations,” said Michael Faulkender, Under -Secretary of the Treasury for International Finance, quoted in the official statement.

According to US authorities, both Hamas and FPLP have a long history of non-profit organizations, using this strategy to capture funds and escape international surveillance. With the imposition of these sanctions, the assets of the entities in US territory are frozen-and any transaction with US citizens or companies is prohibited.

The measure comes at a time when Washington tries to reinforce financial control mechanisms about armed groups considered a threat to the stability of the Middle East.
