A chicken from a very rare species was first seen in the Chernobyl area

On the territory of the Chernobic radio biosphere reserve was observed a rare bird – a codalb chicken, a species included in the red book of Ukraine.

The announcement was made by the reserve press service.

At the beginning of May, the specialists inspected a nesting area, where they identified the presence of a codalb chicken. According to ornithologist Sergei Domașevski, the young bird stood on a branch next to the nest. Its plumage was already completely formed, indicating the proximity of the first flight. “Under favorable conditions, the chicks can already leave 10-14 weeks after hatching,” explains the representatives of the reservation.

Even after the first flight, the young codalbes remain near the nest and return to their parents. The definitive separation takes place in the fall, when an independent life begins.

Such observations are an essential part of monitoring the state of the population of this rare species. The recording of a healthy and active chicken indicates a successful reproduction and good conditions in the reserve.
