Governor and Attorney General contest federalization of the National Guard and shipping of Marines to contain protests

California governor Gavin Newsom (Democratic Party) and the Attorney General filed an emergency motion against the (Republican Party) and the US Department of Defense to block the presence of Navy officers in.

The measure took place this 3rd (10.jun.2025). Authorities contested the federalization of and sending 700 naval Marines to the region in response to protests against Trump’s. This is the motion (PDF – 412 KB).

The lawsuit seeks to interrupt what Newsom and Bonta call “Illegal militarization” from Los Angeles. The Court has not yet set a date for the hearing on the emergency request submitted by the authorities.

According to the office of, “The president’s actions not only caused widespread panic and chaos, but also diverted resources unnecessarily, while the state works to calm a community terrified by the reckless federal intervention.”.

Newsom legal team that measures violate the US constitution and title 10 of the US Code, which requires authorization from the governor for the federalization of the State National Guard. Newsom states that this consent has never been requested or granted.

“Sending trained combatants to the streets is unjustly and threatens the core of our democracy. Donald Trump is behaving like a tyrant, not as a president”he said.

The demonstrations began after operations of the ICE (Immigration and Customs Service) in Los Angeles and neighboring communities. Trump issued a memorandum on Saturday (7.Jun) determining to the Department of Defense to take control of members of the National Guard and send Marines to the area.
