Sentenced to 22 years and 8 months for the murder of ex-girlfriend Mércia Nakashima, he has been dedicated to an intense routine in the courts since he went to the open regime in 2023. The now former detainee has been triggering disaffected in court for public statements which, he said, hurt his honor.
In April 2024, Mizael filed a lawsuit against state deputy Márcio Nakashima (PDT), the victim’s brother, alleging slander. The parliamentarian had stated that Mizael would be advocating illegally and maintaining a relationship with a married woman. Márcio maintained that the accusations came from complaints from lawyers. The woman denied any affective involvement, describing the relationship as a longtime friendship.
The Brazilian Bar Association () confirmed Mizael’s exclusion from his staff in 2023, which prevents his acting as a lawyer. The court denied Mizael’s request for Márcio to be prohibited from quoting him in the press, based on the right to freedom of expression.
