Kosovo agreed to receive deported persons from the US, while the government plans to accept 50 migrants annually.
The Kosovo government agreed to the United States request on Wednesday and will receive migrants deported from the country. So far, Pristina plans to receive 50 deported people per year. Reuters, writes TASR.
“The government has expressed its readiness to participate in (receiving deported) with the possibility of selecting persons from the proposed group, provided that they meet the specific criteria concerning the rule of law and the public order,” the Kosovo government said in a statement.
Migration agreements
Kosovo has already concluded a similar agreement with Denmark and from 2027 it should start to receive 300 prisoners from Danish prisons in exchange for EUR 210 million. It also expressed interest in receiving deported from Britain.
Reuters recalls that US President Donald Trump’s government is looking for partners on the international scene who would be willing to receive deported persons from the US, as Trump is trying to fulfill its pre -election promises and expel a record number of illegal migrants. Moreover, relations between Kosovo and the US are very close, as Washington was the main supporter of Kosovo’s independence from Serbia in 2008.
The independence of the mostly Albanian -speaking Kosovo is recognized by the majority of EU countries with the exception of Slovakia, Romania, Spain, Romania and Cyprus.
