The Argentine court rejected on Wednesday (11) the prosecutor’s request for the immediate arrest of former President Cristina Kirchner, sentenced to six years in prison for corruption.

Kirchner now has a period of up to four days to voluntarily present to the authorities, as determined by the country’s Supreme Court.

The decision of the Supreme Court, announced on Tuesday (10), confirmed the conviction of the former president, who ruled Argentina between 2007 and 2015, and determined his lifetime ineligibility.

The Court also established a period of up to five days for Kirchner to surrender, but the prosecution had requested immediate imprisonment, alleging risk of escape.

Over 70 years, Cristina Kirchner may request the execution of the sentence on a home regime, a request that her lawyers have already filed and still awaiting court decision.

In a speech to supporters after the sentence, the former president claimed to be the victim of political persecution and harshly criticized the judges responsible for the conviction, as well as the current government of Javier Milei.

The conviction is related to a corruption scheme involving businessman Lázaro Báez, a friend of the Kirchner family, accused of overpricing public works and passing on some of the funds to the former president and her husband, former President Néstor Kirchner.

The case would have caused an estimated loss of $ 1 billion to the public coffers.

Cristina Kirchner denies all accusations and states that the process was conducted with a predefined sentence.

The rejection of the appeal by the Supreme Court prevents her from running for the September legislative elections, in which she intended to run for a deputy for the province of Buenos Aires.
