Mexico City authorities inaugurated on Wednesday (11) two clocks that count the countdown to the 2026 World Cup, exactly one year from the beginning of the tournament in the Mexican capital.

Next World Cup, whose opening game will be at Azteca Stadium on June 11, will be the first organized together by three countries: Mexico, the United States and Canada.

Mexico City, 9.2 million inhabitants, “will live the World Cup without racism, without classism, without discrimination, without xenophobia and without homophobia,” promised Mayor Clara buggy during the revelation of one of the clocks in an old mansion in the capital.

“All fans are welcome,” added Brgada, alongside former Italian player Alessandro del Piero, world champion in 2006 with Azzurra.

During the event, Mayor and Del Piero also displayed the World Cup Cup.

The other clock began operating on Paseo de La Reform Avenue, near the famous national auditorium.

Mexico City will host five games on the mythical Azteca Stadium, which will become the first to host the opening of three World Cups. There, Brazil from Pelé (1970) and Argentina de Maradona (1986) were world champions.

The Mexican cities of Guadalajara (West) and Monterrey (north) will receive four other matches each.

In a statement, FIFA said it expects about 6.5 million fans at the 2026 World Cup stadiums. The matches will be distributed in 16 host cities.

“The splendor, culture and unique taste of each of our 16 host cities will be in full exhibition while the World Cup shows the world all that North America has to offer,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said. “We look forward to welcoming teams and guests from all continents to celebrate the beautiful sport on their most majestic stage.”

The measure reaches Iran, one of 13 countries that have already secured a place in the World Cup. The veto, however, also provides for exceptions for players, technicians, employees and relatives of members of the Asian selection, but blocks the entry of fans.

“Each country has its own policies, but we are for the unit. Fans around the world will go to the US, as well as to Mexico and Canada. As always, before the World Cup, many topics are discussed, but when starting it will be a party,” said the president of FIFA.
