The fall occurred in a residential area near the airport, around 5 am
A Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from Air India shortly after taking off from the city of Ahmedabad, in western India, this Thursday (12.jun.2025). The aircraft was carrying 242 people and was destined for Gatwick airport in London. This is the first accident involving this model by plane since its launch in 2011.
The fall occurred in a residential area near the airport, around 5 am in Brasilia time (approximately 1 pm local time). There is still no confirmation of the number of dead or injured.
The AI171 flight crew issued an alert “mayday” (International Danger Alert Code) moments before losing contact with the control tower. According to the FlightTar24 platform, the communication was interrupted when the plane was about 190 meters high.
The accident seconds after takeoff. Air India airline and Gatwick airport confirmed the incident. Prem at 242 people on board, were:
- 232 passengers;
- 10 crew;
- 169 Indians;
- 53 British;
- 7 Portuguese;
- 1 Canadian.
A former minister of the Gujarat region was also among the passengers, according to the newspaper report India Today.
