Acre leads national ranking of young people who do not work or study, says IBGE

While Brazil celebrates the historical fall in the proportion of young people between 15 and 29 years old who do not work, they do not study or qualify professionally, Acre goes against the trend and leads the national ranking with the largest percentage of this population: 30%.

The data were released on Friday (13) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), through the National Continuous Household Sample Survey (Continuous Pnad), and refer to the year 2024.

In the country, the index fell from 19.8% in 2023 to 18.5% this year, the lowest level from the beginning of the historical series with new methodology, in 2019. This is the first time the indicator has been below 19%, reflection, according to IBGE, of a warmer job market in recent months.

However, in Acre, three out of ten young people follow out of school, professional qualification and labor market – a scenario that lights a warning for the formulation of public policies in the state. The average Acrean even exceeds that of the North (21.8%) and Northeast (25.3%) regions, which have already had the worst indicators between the Brazilian regions.

Social inequality reflects in the numbers

The research also revealed profound gender and race inequalities across the country. Among women aged 15 to 29, 24.7% were outside the market and the education system in 2024, against 12.5% among men. Already among young black or brown, the rate reached 21.1%, well above 14.4% registered between whites.

General scenario points to improvement

Despite the negative clipping for Acre, the total number of young people in this situation in Brazil fell from 9.6 million in 2023 to 8.9 million in 2024. At the same time, the share of young people who reconcile work and study (from 15.3% to 16.4%) and also those who are only working (from 39.4% to 39.9%).
