In the midst of chaos with deportations, demonstrations, police attacks, in the presence of military forces and threats to his own arrest, the California commander openly confronts President Donald Trump, in a “more important” conflict.

Who is Gavin Newsom

Newsom started from the lower strata of the US local political scene in 1996 and in 2003 managed to become the mayor of San Francisco, where he served two terms. He was then married to the current US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Gilfail, with American magazines calling them “young Kennedy”, though their marriage finally lasted for five years, until 2006.

As the mayor of San Francisco, he first drawn national attention when he supported homosexual marriages, violating state legislation. Despite his reactions, his popularity continued to grow sharply in 2018, he won the top position of his state with a sweeping victory. He thus became the ruler of California, a post he was re -elected in 2022.

While there were speculations that he could replace Joe Biden after the former president’s departure from the presidential race last summer.

The next democratic president?

“Democracy is attacked in front of our eyes,” he said in a speech in front of the cameras on Tuesday night, referring to what is happening in Los Angeles. “The moment we were scared has arrived.”

When Newsom completed his speech, “it was clear that he was not only addressing his state, but also throughout the country – and his tested party,” said New York Times.

The newspaper explains that, addressing the Democrats who, after defeating the November elections, are seeking guidance and leadership, the California governor has taken advantage of one of the highlights of his political career to present the threat that, as he argued, recommended that President Trump has to do. It even hinted at that.

The next presidential elections are more than three years away, “but it was difficult to watch the speech – which was spoken while protests against Trump were spreading – without wondering if the 2028 election campaign has already begun,” the NY Times added.

After all, Newsom has not hidden his intention to claim the presidency and this speech had all the features of a national television appearance for the White House. Framed by the US and California flag, in a suit and tie, he read excerpts from a well -prepared reason – which is rare because of his dyslexia, which has made it difficult for him during his career.

This speech was the culmination of the intense confrontation of recent days between Newshore and Trump. But it was also an indication of the rapid change in News’ political position, which just a month ago saw his acceptance rates fall.

He was facing the heavy burden of a huge fiscal deficit in California, the responsibility for the rebuilding of Los Angeles after the January fires, as the latter proceeded to cut critical programs for California. In addition, in his 57s, he has been in his last years as California’s ruler, as the State Constitution is not allowed to claim a third term.

However, with his aggressive statements against Trump and his dynamic attitude against the US president’s policies, Newsom may have placed himself as the leader of a resistance from which he used to keep distances. The question is whether he can do what many other Democrats did not do during these five chaotic months of Trump’s presidency: to unite the Democratic Party around a strategy to weaken a president that seems invincible.
