The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, spoke on Thursday (12) about the Suçuarana Operation, triggered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) on June 5, in the Extractive Reserve (Resex) Chico Mendes, located in Xapuri.
The action focuses on combating illegal activities, especially the irregular raising of cattle, pointed out as the main responsible for the advancement of deforestation in the reserve – currently the most deforested among all federal conservation units in the country.

The operation has the support of several bodies, including the National Force, Federal Police, Federal Highway Police, Brazilian Army, Federal Prosecutor, IDAF and Acre Environmental Policing Battalion (BPA). According to Marina, the goal is to remove cattle from embargoed areas and illegal occupations that disrespect the conservation unit management plan.
Marina pointed out that the actions have been the target of attacks and misinformation, especially against extractive leader Raimundo Mendes de Barros, known as Raimundão, cousin of rubber tapper Chico Mendes, symbol of social and environmental struggle in Brazil.
“Unfortunately, a uninformation network and attacks have been directed to the honor and family of Raimundão. I manifest my support and solidarity with him, his family and everyone in the community,” wrote the minister on their social networks.
She stressed that the actions are not directed to regular extractive communities, legally recognized and who act sustainably, but to land grabbers and cattle breeders who have advanced illegally about protected areas, generating social conflicts, environmental degradation and increased deforestation.
The minister also reported that security forces remain in the region to ensure the physical integrity of civil servants, local leaders and threatened residents, such as Raimundão’s family.
