We may want to lead the Unified Party for 4 years, but toucans were against; Convention was held on June 6
The PSDB and Somos gave up the party merger that had been negotiating since the beginning of 2025. According to the Poder360the reason was the proposal of the Somos to command the unified subtitle for the next 4 years, which did not have the approval of the toucans.
The impasse occurred after the toucans suggest a shared management model, with a relay in the presidency of the new subtitle – a semiannual first, then annual. The proposal did not advance and the president of the PSDB, should communicate the departure of the process to the press soon.
On June 5, the PSDB had approved, with 201 votes in favor and 2 against the merger with Somos in party convention.
Party fusion is the definitive union between 2 or more political parties, which form a single acronym. The subtitles cease to exist individually, with statute, directories and CNPJ (National Register of Legal Entities). Unlike the federation, there is no possibility of future separation.
Toucans at risk of extinction
A constitutional amendment promulgated in 2017 established the performance clause mechanism. It is a barrier with criteria for parties to have access to the party fund and free radio and TV advertising. The goal is to reduce the number of acronyms, encouraging the smaller ones to merge with each other or incorporate into the larger ones to improve governance.
