The name first appeared in a poem, alluding to a passion for a woman. Was invented 311 years ago by the writer Jonathan Swiftfamous for writing ‘The Travel of Gulliver’. The Irishman used him in a poem as a pseudonym, to refer to Esther Vanhomrigh, the woman who was in love.
To create the pseudonym for the lover, the famous author resorted to a neologism: he took the first three letters of his beloved nickname and, adding them to a diminutive distorted from Esther, the woman’s first name, created the name Vanessa.
