At first it was an intercontinental cup, and the Europeans treated it by the official name when they won it in the tournament promoted by UEFA and Conmebol.
We South Americans always call the winner world champion, whether at first, in two games, there and here, in just one, in Japan, because Argentine violence made the Europeans give up coming here.
It was really arrogance to call a World Cup that excluded the other continents, as arrogant is to call the world champion the NBA winner, especially after selections from other countries took the US Olympic gold.
Arrogance like that of the English, who did not dispute the World Cup in 1930, 1934 and 1938 because, inventors of football, they imagined being superior – to come to the 1950 World Cup and being eliminated by the US in Belo Horizonte.
Arrogants were also cariocas and paulistas, certain to be unsurpassed in Brazil, until, in the 1970s, Atletico Mineiro won the first Brazilian Championship and the International Gaucho was three -time champion in 1975, 1976 and 1979.
When, in 2000, FIFA decided to organize what was called the first Club World Championship, with representatives of the six confederations of the planet Bola, the controversy was established around the validity of the Intercontinental Cup, after all recognized by FIFA, because the second World Cup was eventually played in 2005.
And when, from 2010, African and Asian clubs hit the finals by defeating the South Americans, the hegemony consecrated in the Intercontinental Cup was definitely broken.
Now we have the first Club World Cup, played in the same way as the teams, although at least two of the best teams on earth, such as Liverpool and Barcelona, champions of the two main international leagues, are out of the tournament.
This is how things work, and money is imposed as it only happens in capitalism.
There will always be those who contest one aspect or another of each competition, in the taste of their preferences and conveniences.
Uruguayans, for example, consider themselves four-time world champions, because they add, in addition to the World Cups won in 1930 and 1950, the two Olympic gold medals won in 1924 and 1928, when there was not the World Cup yet.
Palmeiras and Fluminense judge themselves world champions because they won the Rio 1951 and 1952 Cups, respectively, silly that only serves to make the great alviverde conquest that rescued the self-love of our football after Maracanazo.
Title that had even more value than the two-time Santos championship in the Intercontinental Cup (World!) For the simple reason Brazil, when Pelé & Cia won the cups in 1962 and 1963, already surpassed the mutt complex with the conquest of two-time championship in 1958 and 1962, that is, no further doubt about the capacity of Brazilian football.
Historical reviews aside, as was made, by mere politicking, of the Brazil Cup champions equivalent to the champions of the Brazilian championships, we try to enjoy the tournament in the United States with four Patropi clubs and there are extras, supporters of Manchester City, PSG and Real Madrid.
They will probably really. But…
