A new climb of tensions began in the Middle East after Israel launched an attack on a nuclear installation in Iran at dawn last Friday (13). Harvard researcher and professor at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), Vitelio Brustolin, analyzed the situation in an interview with CNN Brazil.
According to Brustolin, Israel and Iran were not always enemies. The State of Israel, created in 1948, was initially recognized by Iran, which at the time was ruled by a US -backed monarchy. The rupture occurred in 1979 with the Islamic Revolution in Iran.
“Israel does not tolerate that Iran has a nuclear program. And as Iran told the destruction of the state of Israel, Israel has long been sabotaging this nuclear program,” the expert explained.
Iranian Nuclear Program Advancement
The teacher pointed out that Iran was close to producing their first nuclear warheads, having enough enriched uranium to manufacture nine warheads, as well as about 3,000 missiles that could be used as nuclear weapons.
Brustolin stressed that Iran is the second most sanctioned country in the world, behind only Russia. Sanctions affect various sectors, including the Iranian Air Force, which operates with old and obsolete fighters.
International treaties and regulations
The expert explained that Iran is part of the treaty of nuclear non -proliferation, which allows the enrichment of uranium for peaceful purposes. However, in 2002, uranium enrichment facilities were discovered for war purposes in the country.
In 2015, a nuclear agreement was established between Iran and World Power, providing strict inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency. However, the United States withdrew from the agreement in 2018, and since then, attempts to reactivate it were unsuccessful.
