An entourage of politicians and secretaries, including the mayor of, Welberth Rezende, is sheltered in a bunker in recent attacks in the region. The official mission, which was attended by 25 Brazilian authorities, aimed to participate in an event about smart cities. However, the event was canceled due to the conflict between Israel and Iran, which resulted in the closure of airspace, making it impossible to immediately return Brazilians to the country.

Mayor Welberth Rezende reported on social networks the moments of tension experienced on the site, mentioning that more than 100 missiles were fired from Iran towards Israel, but most were intercepted. He pointed out that the explosions are audible and that the entourage is in constant contact with the Israeli government. Rezende, however, complains that he did not receive “any kind of support” from the Brazilian government. The group now seeks alternative measures to leave the conflict zone.

“Most understand that it is better to go out terrestrial. We have some options here: one is to go out for Egypt, the other is to go out for Jordan and another by the sea, for Cyprus. And from our departure, to get an airport to return to Brazil,” said Rezende, who charged support from Itamaraty. “It’s not because we are municipal authorities, every Brazilian deserves support from his government.” In addition to Rezende, the mayor of Nova Friburgo, Johnny Maycon, is also among the sheltered, sharing the same apprehension and expectation.

The situation is closely monitored by representatives from other countries, such as Panama, Paraguay and Argentina, who also await an opportunity to leave the region. It is expected that as soon as the airspace is reopened and the safety conditions allow, the authorities can return to their home countries. Meanwhile, the Brazilian entourage remains on alert, following the instructions of local and international authorities, and seeking to keep calm in the midst of uncertainty.
