France removes the legion of honor to Sarkozy after definitive conviction for corruption

The court considered former French president definitely guilty of trying to corrupt Supreme Court magistrate Gilbert Azibert to obtain confidential information related to another judicial investigation from which he was targeted

Nicolas Sarkozy has lost the legion of honor, the highest French official distinction, after his definitive conviction for corruption, now that the former president has sold out all available legal resources.

An published decree Estge Sunday in the Official Gazette formalizes the withdrawal of the decoration, with retroactive effect on May 17, 2023, when Sarkozy was sentenced to three years in prison, two of which with suspended sentence.

The court considered former French president definitely guilty of trying to corrupt Supreme Court magistrate Gilbert Azibert to obtain confidential information related to another judicial investigation from which he was targeted.

Sarkozy, who led the country between 2007 and 2012, served part of the prison sentence under electronic surveillance for three months, and then obtained parole, for being over 70 years.
