Lula is due to arrive in Canada on Monday (16)

The summit of the seven (G7) group begins this Sunday (15), with high tensions due to the escalation of the conflict between EOE of the threat of a global trade war, with less than a month to the end of the tariff truce announced in April by the president of the United States,. The president (PT) confirmed a presence last week and is expected to arrive on Monday (16) to attend the meeting of the richest countries in the world.

In addition to Australia, Ukraine, South Korea, Mexico and India were invited to participate in the G7 summit this year. The meeting takes place between this Sunday and Tuesday (17), in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada. This is the 50th group meeting, formed by USA, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Canada.

It will be the first time Lula and Trump will be at the same negotiation table since the Republican inauguration in January. The Brazilian president should take advantage of the high global dome for bilateral meetings, especially with Trump. One of the pre-coorded meetings must be with the president of Ukraine, who seeks support for the war against Russia. If held, it will be the second meeting between them. The first occurred during the United Nations (UN) General Assembly (UN) in 2023 in New York after the frustrated attempt of a meeting during the G7 that year in Japan.

The petista confirmed his participation in the summit only last week, after formal invitation made by the Prime Minister of Canada, during a call, a few days of the event in the Canadian mountains. Lula’s presence in the G7 summit, however, was already foreseen. Visiting Paris, the Brazilian even made a joke on the subject and said he would go to Canada until the United States did not attach the neighboring country. “I will participate in the G7 before the US attaches Canada as a US state. Take this short time that Canada has as sovereign,” Lula said at the time.

For the deputy director of the Atlantic Council Geoeconomics Center, Ananya Kumar, the invitation of G7 to countries such as Brazil occurs amid the greater weight of these nations in the global economy, to the detriment of the lower representativeness of the most developed. In 1992, when Russia first participated in the G7, the combined economies of the five founding countries of the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) accounted for less than 9% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while the seven group concentrated 63%. “Today, G7’s participation is 44% of the world GDP and the founding members of BRICS more than doubled, reaching almost 25%,” says Kumar.

This year, the G7 summit is expected to be marked by the escalation of new conflicts between Israel and Iran, with reflexes in safety and the world economy due to leap in oil prices. Renewed tension in the Middle East tends to guide part of the meeting, consuming the leaders’ agenda for other matters. G7 members should try to persuade Trump, the only leader with real influence on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel asked the US government to join the war against Iran to eliminate the Tehran nuclear program, according to foreign press.

End of the tariff truce

The attention with conflicts in the Middle East divide the stage with the rates of, with less than a month to the end of the new rates, announced in April. There is an expectation of advances in agreements between the US and countries like Japan and Canada during the summit. So far, Americans have seized agreement with the United Kingdom and advanced in preliminary negotiations with.

The Prime Minister of Canada stated that a bilateral meeting with Trump, on the sidelines of the G7 meeting, will be decisive in assessing how close the two countries are in a US tariff agreement. “The G7 Summit in Alberta will be important for several reasons,” said Carry, in an interview with the radio station.

In a statement, the G7 lists three priorities for 2025: worldwide protection, with the fight against foreign interference and improving joint forest fires; Energy security and acceleration of digital transition; and partnerships to expand private investments, with the generation of better paid jobs. “The G7 leaders summit in Kananaskis is a time for Canada to work with reliable partners to face challenges with unity, purpose and strength,” says Canada Prime Minister, in a note’s note.

The G7 meets annually to discuss the main global economic and political issues. The group was created in 1975, when France invited the leaders, along with Italy, to the first official summit. The following year, Canada joined the bloc of the richest countries in the world, creating the G7. The European Union also participates in meetings, but is not considered an official member.

In recent years, large emerging markets have been invited to participate in the summit, such as Brazil, India, Mexico, South Africa and even China, whose role in the global economy has been debated in the block. “Has the leaders of last year’s leaders been especially critical of China, which was mentioned twenty -nine times?” Notes Kumar of Atlantic Council. Russia was suspended in 2014 due to the annexation of Crimea.
