Study with half a million people prove that riding a bicycle helps prevent dementia. It is not just by exercise – it is a matter of memory.
An investigation team used data from half a million inhabitants from the United Kingdom on its usual form of locomotion.
The means of transportation were divided into four groups: non -active (cars and public transport), walking travel, on foot and not active combined and, finally, a group of people who moved mainly bicycle or who used the bike along with other options.
“The results of this cohort (A type of observational statistics study) suggest an association between the Active Travel Mode and incident dementia and brain structure, ”write researchers in published in JAMA Network Open.
Compared to those who move in a non -active waycyclists had a 19% lower risk of dementia For all causes, a 22% lower risk of Alzheimer’s, a 40% lower risk of young early dementia (before 65 years) and a 17% lower risk of late onset dementia.
“Our findings suggest that the promotion of active travel strategies, in particular cycling, may be associated with a lower risk of dementia among middle-aged adults and the elderlywhich brings substantial benefits to public health by encouraging affordable and sustainable practices for the preservation of cognitive health, ”write the researchers.
The reason is perhaps in memorization of the course, suggest the authors, coupled with factors such as the level of physical activity that cycling requires the great responsible for reducing the risk of dementia, or the fact that it has to decide routes and directions, or the need to maintain alertor perhaps the fact that it is more exposed to fresh air.
