More than 100,000 lived without sewage collection in the Pinheiros Basin, in 2022

In 2022, 107,900 people lived in homes without sewage collection in the Pinheiro River Basin region in São Paulo. Regarding treated water, 19,800 people have not yet accessed. The information was released on Monday (16) in the research “Economic Benefits of Sanitation Expansion in the Pinheiros River Basin”, made by Trea Brasil.

The lack of proper sanitation is responsible for a series of diseases. In 2019, the region recorded 78,100 cases of people away from their activities due to water disorder diseases.

The Pinheiros River Basin passes through the municipalities of Taboão da Serra and Embu das Artes, as well as the state capital. The river is one of the main tributaries of the Tietê River and is part of the Alto Tietê basin.

Advances in the Sanitation of the Pinheiros River Basin

Sanitation in the region underwent an advance between 2000 and 2022. During this period, 589,000 people had access to treated water and 840,000 people had access to sewage collection.

According to information from the National Sanitation Information System (SNIS), 99.4% of the Pinheiros River Basin population was served with water supply and 96.7% was served with sewage collection in its homes by 2022.

Between 2000 and 2022, the Pinheiros River Basin Water Distribution Network went from 4,600 km to 6,700 km. Sewage collection went from 3,500 to 5,200 km.

During this period, it was found that there was a reduction of 3.7% per year in the number of hospitalizations for water and respiratory disorders in the resident population in the Pinheiros River basin. There was a reduction in hospitalizations in the hospital network of SUS.
