The President of the United States, vetoed a plan of the Israeli government to murder Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah. The information was confirmed on Sunday (15) by a high American employee to AFP agency. Revelation occurs amid the most intense military climbing between the two countries in decades. “We found that the Israelis had plans to reach the supreme leader of Iran. President Trump went against it and we told the Israelis not to do so,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

Asked by Fox News about Trump’s alleged veto, Israeli Prime Minister avoided commenting directly. “I won’t get into this matter,” he said. “But I can say that we will do whatever is needed.”

The change of missiles between Iran and Israel has already lasted four consecutive days and marks the most serious moment of the historic conflict between the two countries. The confrontation began on Friday (13), when Israel released a large-scale offensive against Iranian military and nuclear targets, causing dozens of deaths, including high commanders and scientists linked to the Iran atomic program. In response, Iran fired hundreds of missiles and drones against Israeli territory. Explosions were heard in Jerusalem and alert sirens were called in various regions. Air defense systems were also activated in Tehran, according to local press reports.

Amid climbing, Trump told the press that the United States is not directly involved in the conflict, but signaled that the situation may change. “At this moment, we are not involved. But it is possible that we get involved,” he said. He also threatened to respond with “all strength and power” if Iran attack American interests.

Despite the tension, the US president appealed for a diplomatic solution. “I think it’s time to reach an agreement,” he said on Sunday. “Although sometimes they need to fight, let’s see what happens.” Trump also said he was open to the idea that Russian President Vladimir Putin, acts as a mediator to end the conflict.

The veiled war between Iran and Israel extends for decades, through indirect attacks, sabotage and actions of regional allies. The current confrontation, however, is the first with direct and simultaneous attacks between the two countries, raising the risk of a regional war in the Middle East.
