Modern version of Fathers Day came from the US
The story of Father Day, as is known at present, began to be written in the early 20th century in the United States (USA). In most countries of the world, including Slovakia, it is commemorated on the third Sunday of June. This year it was 15 June.
However, the tradition of honoring the task and importance of the father for children can be traced in the ancient Babylonian Empire. In this context, the boy Elmesa, who engraved on an ancient clay Babylon table, was mentioned about his father, about 4000 years ago, wishing him good health and a long life. However, the modern version of Fathers Day dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and has its roots in the US.
The first mention of 1907 is associated with American Grace Golden Clayton. In December 1907, 361 men died in a mining misfortune in Monongah in Western Virginia, of which 250 were fathers. The daughter of one of the dead miners, just Grace Golden Clayton, suggested a local pastor in Fairmmonte to take place in honor of their commemorative worship. Three years later in Spokan, Washington, USA, the tradition of Father’s Day has already been established.
The civil war veteran William Jackson, after his wife’s death, raised six children. His daughter Sonora Smart -Dodd perceived her father as a hero – as a courageous, dedicated and loving man. When she learned that mothers had their holiday, she suggested that fathers had a similar.
The first unofficial celebration took place on her father’s birthday on Sunday, June 19, 1910. Since then, the third Sunday, the third Sunday, has gradually become a feast of all fathers, while the popularity of this holiday has continued to grow. He became official in character during the reign of US President Lyndon Johnson.
In 1966 he signed the Declaration, which determined the third Sunday in June as an official feast of Father’s Day. However, only US President Richard Nixon confirmed the permanent celebration of the Fathers Day in 1972 on the third -year level in the third Sunday of June. Sonor Smart Doddová was awarded at the World Exhibition in Spokan in 1974.
